Why it is harder for doctors
Medical training in India is long, and the hardest years often fall in your late twenties. Night duties, 24- or 36-hour shifts and exam preparation leave little time to meet people outside the hospital.
Earnings also come later than in many other careers. A resident on a stipend may be earning less than a friend who started working straight after college, even though their long-term prospects are strong. That can make conversations about marriage and money feel awkward.
And the people who understand this life best, other doctors, are often just as busy.
Be honest about your schedule
The single biggest source of friction for doctor couples is time. Say clearly whether your schedule is relaxed, busy but structured, or hectic, and what the next few years look like. A partner who knows what to expect will plan around it instead of being disappointed by it.
Talk about timing early
Where will each of you be for PG or residency? Is either of you likely to move for a seat or a job? Deciding early whether you are open to a long-distance phase saves a lot of heartache later.
Involve family, on your terms
Families often want to be part of the search. It helps to agree with them upfront on what matters most to you, such as values, the kind of career your partner has, and where you want to live, so introductions start from the right place.
